A “Calibration” rehearsal of the Tennessee Opera Theatre orchestra under the direction of conductor Kevin Class. The orchestra is made up of students, many of whom have never played opera before and are experiencing being in the Bijou Theatre’s orchestra pit for the first time. The objective of this “calibration rehearsal” is to acclimate the players to the unusual space and acoustics of the pit, drawing their attention away from the distractions of this new and confusing environment by refocusing their attention to careful consideration of the quality of their sound, attention to details of phrasing and articulation, creating clear and communicative musical shapes, and attending to balance and articulations. This is carried out through specific work on details of the Preludio of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, immediately preceding a run-through (dress rehearsal) of the complete opera.
