When we're practicing, it's very tempting to sit around playing pieces. After all, this is why we wanted to learn guitar. We want to play beautiful music. But we're not building up our skill set that way. We're not getting better. Our practice will be more productive if we include lots of skills-building exercises too. We can use scales, patterns, or slur exercises for instance. In fact, we should incorporate any technical exercises that will stretch us a little bit. Then we can take these enhanced skills forward to the next piece, and the next. It'll help to overcome problems and make us better guitarists.
