About this piano masterclass:

Rondo in D major, K.485 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

0:00 Intro and playing part from Gabriele Casciano
5:45 Advice part from Aleksandar Madžar

After Gabriele Casciano plays Mozart's Rondo in D major K. 485, the Professor tells that they are going to start working in detail on some notes. He says that playing Mozart is tricky because, besides needing a lot of precision, a note that is too strong or too piano can change a whole phrase. That's why one has to be very picky about it, even more than with other composers, because every note plays a fundamental role. Another remark of the teacher is the machinery on which a piece like this is based, how everything works as a kind of gear, which one cannot interrupt, either by modifying the tempo too much or by adding a musicality that can interfere with the music or "overinterpretate" it. Professor Madzar talks about the importance of the hierarchy of the downbeat within the measure and its relationship to the harmony of that bar. For instance, they discuss how to decide which beat or harmony to emphasize when they all seem equally important in a cadenza. After that, Professor Madzar then proposes to emphasize the moment when a phrase appears in minor, rather than making it smaller as is usually the case. The professor also gives importance to the historicist practice, giving ideas of phrasing related to the 18th century and encouraging the student to leave aside the romantic phrasing, more typical of composers like Schumann.

What we learn in this piano masterclass:

- A single note can change the course of an entire phrase.
- Be careful with tempo and musicality so that they do not interfere with the "machinery" of Mozart's music.
- Metrical hierarchy vs harmonical hierarchy.
- Adopt the stylistic practice of the historical moment of the piece.
