If painting in layers is new to you, let me explain what you’re seeing. I began with an underpainting (everything that’s not blue is the imprimatura-bistre underpainting). Now comes color, beginning with what’s furthest away, the sky. Then, I proceed forward into the scene, layer upon layer.
