Many of the old west portraits we see today were taken by photographers who travelled the dangerous frontier with their heavy equipment. They would set up their tent studio or wagon on the outskirts of an Indian village, army post or frontier town. With a rug covering the earth and a flap in the tents roof for light these pioneering photographers were recording history, We only know the faces of many chiefs and frontier characters because of the dedication of these men. Often an uncredited photograph, can be identified
by the photographers uniquely painted backdrop shown in the pictures. Indians may have received their photograph for free as postcards of them were immensely popular back east.
We are fortunate that during the last days of the old west, photography was advanced enough to allow for the capture of these iconic pictures.
