Nina Dobrev (born Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva on January 9, 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria) is a Bulgarian-Canadian actress, model, and producer best known for her breakout role as Elena Gilbert—and her various doppelgänger counterparts—on the hit supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017, 2022 cameo in series finale scene). Her work on the show earned her global recognition and a devoted fanbase thanks to her ability to portray multiple characters with completely different personalities.

Early Life

Dobrev moved to Toronto, Canada, with her family when she was a toddler. She grew up speaking Bulgarian and English, and from a young age showed interest in the performing arts—taking dance, acting, and modeling classes. She attended the Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and studied sociology but left before graduating to pursue acting full time.

Career Beginnings
