???? Here’s a simple, fun way to start playing solo fingerpicking blues!
In this quick lesson, I show you how to build that classic boom-chick / ragtime groove by using your thumb to lay down a muted, percussive bass line. Once that steady bass is rolling, you add simple melody notes on the high E and B strings—open and at the 3rd fret—to make it sound like two guitarists playing at once.
Start slow, get the thumb pattern locked in, then weave the melody on top. It’s one of the best ways to build the muscle memory for more complex fingerpicking down the road.
If you want to go deeper into this style, I’ve got full fingerpicking lessons waiting for you at https://JustinJohnsonGuitar.com or on the Justin Johnson Guitar app for iOS & Android.
