Les Lalanne—Claude (1924–2019) and François-Xavier (1927–2008)—turned animals and flora into witty, functional sculpture: sheep you can sit on, cabbages with chicken legs, and a rhinoceros that unfolds into a working desk.

They met in 1950s Paris, showed together from the 1960s, and were embraced by tastemakers like Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé.

Their auction market has gone wild the last few years.

In October 2019, Sotheby’s Paris sold their personal collection, after they both passed, for €91.3m ($101.5m)—the house’s biggest sale in France at the time.

In 2023, François-Xavier’s near-life-size Rhinocrétaire I set his auction record at €18.3m (Christie’s Paris), while Claude’s unique Très grand choupatte hit about €5m (Sotheby’s Paris), a record for her.

Momentum continued in 2024 with Christie’s New York’s “François-Xavier Lalanne, Sculpteur | Collection Dorothée Lalanne” totaling ~$59m; and in 2025 the Karpidas collection sale saw Lalanne mania again, with a Claude Structure végétale mirror-and-lightwork leaping to $4.8m against a ~$615k high estimate.

Their whimsical hybrids are now highly desired, blue-chip icons.
