Irish music has a certain lift, a pulse that pulls you in — and at the heart of it all are a few core rhythms that keep dancers moving and musicians locked in. In this video, I’m diving into six of the main traditional Irish dance patterns you’ll come across on your journey into the tradition. I’ll be teaching them through the lens of the bodhrán, the Irish frame drum, and sharing some tips on how to recognise each rhythm — whether you’re playing, dancing, or just want to impress your mates by saying, “That’s a jig!”
