Malcolm-Jamal Warner was born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to parents Pamela (who later became his manager) and Robert Warner Jr.. He was named “Malcolm” after activist Malcolm X and “Jamal” after jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. After his parents divorced, young Malcolm moved with his mother to Los Angeles, where he began taking acting classes by age nine. He was raised primarily by his mother, and no siblings have been reported, suggesting he was an only child. Warner’s early interest in performance led him to enroll in acting schools, and he continued his education in the arts. He later returned to New York City to finish high school, graduating from the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan. This prepared him for a career in entertainment at an unusually young age.
