Jean-louis Sénatus was born in Léogâne on August 16, 1949. He began to draw and paint in 1967. In 69, he took courses at the Lope de Véga Institute, then at the Foyer des Arts Plastiques. In 73 he joined the group of "Nouvellistes" (Yves Michaud, Dostaly, Valbrun, J.P. Théard etc ...) which, under the direction of Scordilis, a Greek painter living in Haiti, opened up new perspectives to primitive art.
In 1974, he set up his easel in the studio of the Galerie Monnin and, with Roosevelt Sanon, St-Louis Blaise, Lamour to name only the most famous, he quickly became the leader of the school known as " The Haitian Space ”artistic movement encouraged by Michel Monnin and which gives pride of place to the art of work well done in a magical and sometimes surreal universe where horses dress in red, birds become landscapes, in the early mornings earthly paradise and blessing fields work.
In recent times Jean-Louis Sénatus has soared ever higher in space. The delicacy of its palette gives birth to worlds in perpetual motion in skies chiseled with fine gold, creating distances that overlap and intertwine in a symphony of colors, ocher, yellow, sunrise-sunset oranges, blues tinged with pink, with clouds here and there like bridal veils.
Here, his love of the landscape obeys less and less a concern to represent nature, than a desire to give form to the mystery - everything becomes symbol, phantasmagoria, mysticism and poetry.
Since 1989, Sénatus has come back down to earth in Port-Salut. He built his house there. With patience and persistence, he cultivates his garden there.
And that's why, without doubt, we find in his recent creations the almost realistic beauty of our island in agony, the freshness of our last oases, and this southern light which gives everything a more volume. consistent.
As if he wanted to bring back the angels, the aerial horses, the cornucopia ...

Jean-Louis Sénatus est né le 16 août 1949 à Léogâne, Haïti. Il commence à dessiner et à peindre en 1967, puis en 1969 il suit des cours à l'Institut Lope de Vega et à la Salle des Arts Plastiques de Port-au-Prince. En Haïti, il rencontre le peintre grec Scordillis, avec qui il travaille pendant un an. En 1968, il reçoit le deuxième prix d'un concours d'affiches parrainé par Air France à Port-au-Prince. De 1975 à 1983, il expose en Martinique, en Guadeloupe, au Danemark, en France, en Suisse, à Curaçao, aux États-Unis, en Italie et en Angleterre. Par la transparence de ses couleurs finement nuancées, Sénatus déplace son regard vers les contrées lointaines de l'imaginaire. Chaque tableau est un camée d'une ou deux couleurs qu'il semble pulvériser sur la toile comme par magie.
