Frederic William Burton (1816–1900) was an Irish painter known for the softness and sensitivity of his watercolors. Born in County Clare, Ireland, he began drawing at an early age and studied at the Royal Dublin Society. Fascinated by history, medieval legends, and tragic love stories, he drew inspiration from Nordic and Celtic tales.
His most famous work, Hellelil and Hildebrand, The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864), illustrates an old Danish ballad and has left a deep mark on Irish art. This watercolor, voted "Ireland’s favourite painting" in 2012, is emblematic of his romantic style and silent drama.
A discreet man, Burton rarely exhibited, but his influence went far beyond his artistic production: he directed the National Gallery in London for 20 years, where he greatly enriched the collection. He died in London in 1900, but his art continues to move viewers with its emotional intensity and restrained elegance.
