This is a mistake I see all the time, and it's killing the "pop" in your images. Many photographers drop both the highlights and the whites to increase the dynamic range in their images. Instead of doing that, try dropping the highlights and INCREASING the whites, which will increase the dynamic range while also maintaining the pop that the brightest spots in your image give you.
While it might look like these two sliders do the same thing, they actually don't. Highlights allow you to control the detail in the bright area, potentially bringing back details in a slightly overexposed scene. Whites allows you to set the white point of the image, otherwise known as the brightest value in the whole photo.
