==============
i. Origin of novel:
The novel in English literature is a relatively modern form. However, it emerged as a distinct genre in the 18th century. Earlier prose narratives existed in the form of medieval romances.
The germ (seed) of the novel writing lies in the art of medieval romance. Medieval Romance comes from the words ‘medieval’ which is related to the Middle Age in Europe and ‘Romance’ refers to ‘a tale of love’ and ‘adventure’.
Thus ‘Medieval Romance’ is about the story of love and adventure that was popular during the time of Middle Age.
Later, English novel truly took shape when writers began focusing on realism, individual experience, and everyday life rather than heroic or mythical adventures.
ii. Meaning of Novel:
In English literature, a novel is an extended work of narrative fiction written in prose and typically published as a book.
It is a long-form story that aims to explore human experience in depth through a connected sequence of events involving a set of characters.
In 1350, Boccaccio (bokachoo), a famous Italian writer of his time, wrote a collection of short stories in prose.
That was entitled Decameron. Such stories in Italian language are known as ‘novelle’ (novella).
The word "novel" is derived from the Italian word novella, which means "new" or "short story of something new". People widely believe ‘novelle’ is the root source of novel writing.
iii. Definitions of novel:
F. Marion Crawford, a popular American novelist, once described the novel as a ‘pocket theatre’, containing as it does all the accessories of drama.
Meredith called it ‘a summary of actual life’. It gives a fuller representation of real life and character.
Novel is formally defined as ‘a long narrative in prose detailing the actions of fictitious people’.
