Las Meninas (Spanish for “The Ladies-in-waiting”) is a 1656 painting housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It was created by Diego Velázquez, the foremost painter at the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal and a key figure of the Spanish Golden Age. The work is considered one of the most extensively studied paintings in Western art, celebrated for its intricate and mysterious composition that blurs the boundaries between reality and illusion and for the ambiguous connection it establishes between the viewer and the figures within the scene.
