From spirals to spiders, Louise Bourgeois’s (1911–2010) visceral images are choked with trauma: her father’s affairs while her mother lay dying, the isolation of abandonment, the rage of betrayal. Over the course of eight decades, the French-American artist mined her memories and processed her pain through compulsive creating. Fabric heads evoke her parents’ business conserving tapestries; domestic spaces both shelter and entrap female figures; and spiders honor Bourgeois’s late mother, who was “deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat, and useful as a spider." Though she drew from and contributed to Surrealist, Symbolist, and feminist art, Bourgeois was in a league of her own.
