Kenny Scharf is an American artist born in 1958 in Hollywood, known for his cartoonish, brightly colored works. Describing his work as Pop Surrealist, some integrate it with the Lowbrow art movement. His latest exhibition, Tout Suite, is on view at Galerie Almine Rech @AlmineRechG .
As a child, Scharf's fascination with color began on Saturday mornings with the psychedelic lights of early color TV sets. Influenced by iconic cartoons such as The Flintstones and The Jetsons, he finds inspiration in both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of American suburban life depicted in these series.
A self-taught creative, Kenny Scharf initially aspired to become a commercial artist and do album covers. It was while studying art history that he discovered Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art, and it was the New York art scene, fuelled by the spirit of Warhol's Factory, that convinced him to study art in the Big Apple.
Accepted at the School of Visual Art, he met Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was roaming in the cafeteria, and Keith Haring, who was already painting floor-to-ceiling pieces to the music of Devo. Basquiat, who signed SAMO on the walls of New York, introduced Scharf to street art, while Keith Haring left school and took him to the streets of the East Village, where the most creative artists were blooming. The three friends became inseparable, and Scharf's artistic trajectory moved away from formal education and towards the lively, inspiring environment of the city.
Kenny Scharf's unique, colorful and accessible style brought him success in the '80s. The artist wanted to appeal to everyone and, like Keith Haring, marketed his art on all kinds of media, including T-shirts and other objects affordable to a wide audience. For Scharf, as with music, painting should be understood on several levels, from simple visual pleasure to a deeper understanding of the message embodied in the canvas.
In Tout Suite, Scharf focuses on environmental urgency and climate change. Using his familiar, brightly-colored icons, he invites the public not only to become more aware, but also to enjoy the playful pleasure offered by his canvases and sculptures.
