Johannes Vermeer also known as Jan Vermeer. Born – 31 October 1632 in Delft, Netherlands. Died - 15 December 1675 Delft, Netherlands. He was a painter in the Dutch Baroque Period. His career began in the early 1650’s with paintings of biblical and mythical scenes. Most of his known paintings are of domestic interior scenes depicting middle class life. These paintings are noted for their depiction of light. Vermeer also painted some city scapes. Only about 36 of his paintings still exist today.
During his life time he achieved moderate success with recognition in Delft and the Hague. He appears to have produced relatively few paintings and was not wealthy. He left his wife and children with debt at his death. His modest recognition reduced into obscurity until Vermeer was was rediscovered it the 19th century. Since then Vermeer's status as an artist has grown to where he is now recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch golden age.
