Mitsuro Hikime is a centuries old Japanese wax sculpting method that can be used for making jewellery ????????
This reel is by the brilliant Elsa Tierney (@elsatierney) whose love for wax carving has transformed the way she makes her jewellery ✨
Elsa is an award-winning UK-based jeweller and goldsmith with a background in sculpture and art ????
In this clip she is playing around with a strip of Mitsuro Hikime wax to practice and get a feel for the material ????
It’s a great way of developing ideas and planning compositions, forms and shapes to recreate with a fresh piece of wax later.
Once finished, these beautiful wax sculptures can be cast in precious metals to make jewellery ????
If you’d like to learn more about the history of this amazing technique and how to use it, then do take a look at Elsa’s page @elsateirney (on Insta) to find details about her recently published book on the subject ????
And if you’d like to hear Elsa’s story in more depth, you can listen to our podcast episode where she chats to me about her jewellery journey ????
