Jeff Loomis playing a neoclassical shred line is always a masterclass in technique and style! ???? He kicks it off with sweep picking straight out of the Yngwie Malmsteen playbook but with a twist (the cool sequence) but then transitions seamlessly into a blend of economy picking, legato, and alternate picking that feels distinctly modern. It’s like he’s honoring the past while pushing boundaries into new territory—a perfect mix of precision and creativity. Another thing I think is interesting is that he’s doing what i call cramming which is: instead of doing an even number of notes per beat in the sweep, he’s stuffing weird groupings like triplets and fives etc, but still landing perfectly in time on the notes he wants to accent! When I teach this concept, I call it “cramming”
For anyone wanting to learn it, I noticed Jeff originally plays this tuned down, but I’ve transcribed it in standard tuning to make it more practical for most players. Don’t worry—the fingerings and picking are the same. Let me know how you go with it and whether you want to see more transcriptions like this. Enjoy the tabs!
