I’ve finally taken out a few bags of porcelain to throw a batch of these angular bowls from. I’m thinking thin layers of my usual crackle glazes, or perhaps a mirror-black tenmoku, either way, it’s always a challenge and shock to the system, wedging and throwing this stuff. For a few hours it feels like I’ve reverted back to beginner-self, struggling with clay that never feels really centred and pulls up erratically.

It’s incredible just how much you can get away with when using stoneware, for instance, with the usual high-iron stoneware I throw with, I don’t even have to properly wedge it when I’m making simple shapes like bowls or mugs, when centring too I can be lazy as I’ll be able to centre it as I’m pulling the walls up.

With this porcelain though, all of that indolence goes out the window, I have to wedge it properly and I need to be kinder to it during the centring stage, even this bowl didn’t end up perfectly even, as per the wavering in the rim, but it’s movement that subtle enough that I’ll be able to easily deal with it at the leather hard stage, when trimming the piece.
