Do you stay and clap for the orchestra after the exit music?⁣

Both of my (Will’s) parents are musicians who play in classical concerts and in the pit for musicals. Growing up, instead of having a babysitter, sometimes Will and his sister would sit in the pit wearing all black for the duration of the show. For some shows that didn’t sell so well, they’d sit in the audience. But they would always clap for the artists who’d just played for two and a half hours. (Or in the case of Joseph, played for like 55 minutes? It’s a quick show.) Watching the shows as well as the direct input of unseen contributors was a formative experience.⁣
⁣
The orchestra always gets an acknowledgment during the curtain call. And the final music is called “Exit Music,” instructing the audience to leave. But, still, we always stay to clap for the orchestra when they’re finished.⁣
