For the longest time I’ve been trying to figure out what this sculpture was about. A lot of information has been lost in the technological march forward as it was originally exhibited in 2008.
I think I’ve come to somewhat of a consensus, whether my interpretation is what the artist intended, I’m not sure. But I find this work, like the character of Lucifer himself, rather complicated and layered.
Typically Lucifer is depicted as a simple evil, an antagonist to God, but his name literally means “light-bringer”. Perhaps he can also be seen as humankind’s pursuit of truth and enlightenment.
I find it rather interesting that the work was originally displayed facing a bomb. He’s tied up in telephone wires, another invention of humanity.
Perhaps we’ve evolved past the need for traditional tales of demons and devils to explain suffering. Lucifer now occupies an abandoned church, he’s something of antiquity.
But, in his place, we have found another form of evil. This one’s of our own creation, made with our own two hands, and with our minds, for the torment and pain of others.
Evil is no longer supernatural, an unexplained other. Evil now resides in our systems, our technologies, and even our intentions.
