In #1770 enslaved #AfricanAmerican man, #PrinceDemahBarnes , visited England to receive #painting lessons from #portraitist #RobertEdgePine for the improving of his genius in painting. Five years later, Barnes' wealthy white owners fled to England after their horse was tarred and feathered for supporting the British crown against the #Americancolonist . Barnes became a #freeman and enlisted in the Massachusetts militia to fight for America in the #RevolutionaryWar . One year later Barnes died likely from small pox in Boston and was buried at Trinity Church. There are three known works by the artist and this is one from 1773.
