I used to take group photos pretty wide at something like 35mm or 24mm but recently I've started doing group photos at 85mm when I can. It just looks really nice and I find the compression lovely for hiding distracting backgrounds. Obviously for larger groups this isn't always possible but for groups of 10-20 people outside, it's pretty easy to step back and fit everyone in.
