Rhythm first
2 bar phrase. Bass notes on 1 & 3 of first bar and 1 of the second, fill for the remainder.
I clap any rhythm over the first two beats of bar 2 and the bass copies the rhythm with any notes (pentatonic/blues or random)
This really forces you to play convincingly, simply and in the pocket. The rhythm comes first, notes later. Also helps with playing a fill at a logical point - the end of a 2/4/8 bar phrase.
The 1 & 3 bass line ( from my tune I'll Tell You What it is Later ) also helps center that funk beat/tempo.
On upright I generally try and play funk as simply and as clear as possible. Obviously this is good for electric too.
Thanks to my student @ben_boardman_music for letting me film him and also nailing it!
