Major chords are made up of the Root, 3rd and 5th notes of the major scale.
Root Inversions start with the Root note as the lowest pitch note in the chord.
1st Inversions start with the 3rd as the lowest pitch note in the chord.
2nd inversions start with the 5th as the lowest pitch note in the chord.
In the chord diagrams I am showing the position of the Root, 3rd and 5th within the chord shape.
The 1st inversion of the D major chord can also be described as D/F# as F# is the 3rd note of the D major scale.
