Shooting backlit photos is challenging, but can yield some of the most compelling images when done correctly. Many photographers struggle when shooting directly into the sun, but here's a few tips to help you out:
1️⃣ Use a lens hood or use your hand to block the sun. Sun flare will easily ruin an otherwise good image, so it's important to minimize flare as much as possible. If the sun is just out of your frame, a lens hood or your hand will do the trick. If not, you may need to use your finger to block the sun, and then mask in certain parts of the image later.
2️⃣ Don't be afraid to have small blown-out details. Too many photographers try to take extreme bracketed images to avoid blowing out any part of the image. If it's the area just around the sun, it's okay to be blown out. Creating a super HDR image just doesn't look realistic.
3️⃣ Subtract highlights, and add whites. Doing this in post-processing will help to maintain detail in the brightest spots of your image while also popping some of the bright details to add dynamic range to your image. I do this with most of my images, but especially with backlit scenes.
