I would NOT recommend using an ND filter to get your shutter speed as long as possible for moving water images... While it does smooth out the water quite a bit, you lose all the water's detail, making it look flat and boring.

But if you shouldn't use ultra-long shutter speeds for moving water, what shutter speed should you use?

Ultimately, the decision boils down to picking the shutter that you like best. Personally, I find around 1 second or 1/2 second to offer me water that is smooth enough to look visually pleasing while still offering enough detail to remain interesting. Notice how you get more streaks in the water as you speed up the shutter speed.

When you go too far, however (1/20 second), you'll notice that the water looks blurry, but not in a good way. If you want to shoot a fast shutter speed for large waterfalls, try going up to 1/500 or faster to freeze the motion.

At the end of the day, I was hoping you could do what you think looks best to you, but this is my opinion on shutter speed for moving water photography!
