We all learned the “Big Three” of tone production — bow weight, bow speed, and contact point. But nobody explained why they work together, or what actually connects them.
In this video, I introduce The Traction Model, a new physics-based framework that explains tone production more completely than the traditional model. If you’re a violinist, violist, cellist, or bassist who wants deeper control, consistency, and clarity in your sound, this will reshape how you think about the bow.

What you’ll learn in this video:
• Why weight, speed, and contact point aren’t a closed system
• The physics behind real sound production: the stick–slip phenomenon
• How traction unifies all bowing variables into one framework
• The Traction Spectrum: under-traction, healthy zone, and over-traction
• How variables like bow angle, hair contact, string length, tension, rosin, and humidity all fit together
• Why focusing on traction transforms both technique and tone color

This model connects the “Big Three” with the real underlying mechanism — traction between the bow and string — and gives you a clearer, more flexible way to understand tone production across all string instruments.

In upcoming videos, I’ll break down every variable that affects traction and show you how to adjust each one in your playing.

Tell me in the comments:
What parts of this model would you like explored in more detail? What wasn’t clear? Your feedback helps shape the next videos.

If this helped you understand the bow on a deeper level, tap Like, Subscribe, and share this with another string player who would benefit.
