My great-great-grandfather founded a legendary club in 1884 purely by accident... all because he couldn't pronounce a Dutch word. ????
Heinrich Geuer was a stained-glass artist in Utrecht who was bored of the "stiff" art elite. He wanted to recreate the rowdy fish dinners of his hometown, but his heavy German accent turned "Schelvisch" (Haddock) into "Shelfish."
The name stuck, and "The Shelfish Club" was born. But this wasn't just a pub. They had one golden rule: Everything had to rhyme. If you couldn't improvise a poem, you weren't a true "Shelfish."
From accidental beginnings, this group grew to include giants of Dutch art like Johan Wagenaar and Van Rappard (Vincent van Gogh’s mentor!).
