Hong Kong music icon Coco Lee dies aged 48 after suicide attempt, sisters say

Hong Kong-American singer Coco Lee died at the age of 48 on July 5, 2023, after attempting suicide days earlier, her sisters announced on social media in a statement saying “her rays of light will last forever”. Lee was born in Hong Kong and then from the age of nine was raised in the US before returning to the city in 1993 to start her career. Over three decades as a performer, she released more than 15 albums, and was the first and only Chinese singer to sing at the Oscars, performing “A Love Before Time” from Ang Lee’s 2000 award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
