Homeless Jesus is a sculpture by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz that shows Jesus as a homeless person lying on a park bench. The bronze statue has Jesus under a blanket, his face mostly covered, with only the wounds on his feet showing it’s him, pointing to the crucifixion. He’s thin, and his feet hang off the bench, making him look poor and vulnerable. The sculpture’s meant to make you think about homeles people and those society forgets. It challenges you to see Jesus in the poorest, connecting to his words in Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for the least of my people, you did for me.” The statue’s been placed in cities around the world, and people have mixed feelings. Some like it for highlighting homelessness and encouraging kindness, but others find it uncomfortable seeing Jesus so lowly. It reminds us of Christ’s teachings about humility loving the poor, and how we treat the weakest shows our true character.
