Gavotte, the final piece of Book 1, makes a huge leap in difficulty from The Happy Farmer. It includes grace notes, slurred 16th notes, and pizzicato, all new techniques. Being the longest piece in Book 1 by far, it requires incredible stamina, stage presence, and secure memorization if played in a recital.

My teaching points:
-Study the preparatory exercises on page 44 before learning Gavotte. This page covers grace notes, the high/low 2nd finger in measure 20, slurred 16th notes, and pizzicato.
-Make sure the bow stops before all big string crossings, and use less bow in notes before retakes.
-Contrasting bow strokes of detache and staccato are prevalent in this piece. (ex. Measures 9-10).
-The student should understand the meaning of the term “D.C. al Fine”.
