About this flute masterclass:
Flute Concerto in D major by Carl Reinecke
Recorded with Davide Formisano and Eleanor Or Paz in October 2022.
0:00 Intro and playing part from Eleanor Or Paz
2:20 Advice part from Davide Formisano
In this masterclass, Professor Davide Formisano is accompanied by flute student Eleanor Paz from Israel, who is going to play the first movement of Reinecke's Flute Concerto in D Major. Composed in 1908, it was Reinecke's last concerto before his death. The piece is dedicated to flutist Maximilian Schwedler and was first performed on March 15, 1909 in Leipzig by Schwelder himself. Professor Formisano congratulates his student for her nice choice of color, however he is not convinced by the technical aspect of her performance. Among many technical adjustments, such as air and lip positioning, he reminds her of the German school and of Mathieu André Reichert's exercises (-journaliers, Op. 5 de Etudes de Flûte traversière). He insists that keeping in mind the origins of the piece, where it is from, when it is from, etc., helps finding a good approach. Professor Formisano also mentions the necessity to stay humble with one's body -don't move too much! -, in order to avoid over-communicating false information. It is a show, but it needs to be subtle and delicate, for much exaggeration is distracting and will always immediately be picked up by the audience.
What we learn:
- Managing body language;
- Managing air flow;
- Practicing the basics;
- Singing the piece and learning it by heart;
- Learning not too play too fast.
