Building a Solid Foundation
As a guitarist and songwriter, I’ve spent years in Nashville studios, writing sessions, and on stages. I've also taught thousands and thousands of songwriters and guitarists how to become more knowledgeable, consistent, and confident. These endeavors require a solid foundation to build upon. A foundation that serves you as an accompanist, a songwriter and artist, a recording and performing guitarist, or a lifelong student of the guitar, playing for yourself and with friends and family. These foundational skills are that important. I have intentionally created other courses with the same purpose in mind. And now, we turn to fingerstyle guitar.
Feeling stuck or uninspired?
There comes a point, whether you are a songwriter or guitarist, where who you will like your "go-to" strumming patterns are getting a little stale, and you find yourself a bit stuck and uninspired. Or maybe you’re a guitarist who wants to move beyond the pick and finally get your fingers moving independently? Whether you are just starting out or you’ve been playing for years and want to clean up your technique, Fingerstyle Guitar, Volume 1 is designed to give you that next skill development, motivation and solid foundation... without the overwhelm.
What’s The Focus?
This isn't about complex, time wasting exercises, theory or memorizing a million shapes. We are going to focus on the common and first chords we learn—those rich, open-position shapes that have built many a career and account for countless songs.
Keys & Chord Progressions: We’ll explore the keys you may already find common and useful: C, Am, G, D, A, and E. We have enough work to do, regarding both hands. We have some technical issues to clean up and some new ones to learn
The Right-Hand Engine: You’ll learn how to build a rock-solid internal clock and consistent right hand. We’ll cover multiple rhythms and patterns you can use to add "flavor" to your own songs and performances, immediately.
A "Piano-Style" Approach: We’re going to get your thumb and fingers working independently so you can hold down the bass line and play arpeggios or partial chords. This independence will set you up to explore melodies and embellishments.
Clean, Studio-Ready Tone: I’ll show you how to fix buzzing and muted strings with proper hand positioning. We’ll focus on maintaining an even tone and using dynamics—the stuff that makes all the difference in your confidence, skills and abilities.
Keeping it Simple & Effective
In this first volume, we are sticking to the basics that matter. That means no barre chords, no capos, and no complex fingerings and inversions. We are building the "muscle" you need to eventually tackle styles like Travis Picking, Classical, Blues and Pop styles, making you a more rounded player and songwriter.
By the time you finish this course, you won’t just be playing patterns—you’ll be thinking more like an arranger and performer, not just another learner on a long and frustrating road. You’ll have the tools to play solo and hold the room, or to sit in with other musicians and add that "just right" fingerstyle texture and part.
