Fallout is a masterclass in humanizing villains.
The Ghoul comes across as a horrifyingly brutal and cold-blooded killer, but we’re given a rare glimpse of tenderness when it comes to Roger here. As Roger fights to hold on to his humanity, screaming “My name is Roger,” the Ghoul asks Roger about better days, the taste of food; Blamco Mac’ n’ cheese, ice cream, apple pie, leading Roger to reminisce about his mom’s cooking. And then "BLAM!"
Giving a friend a quick end while he thinks about better times. Doing this brings the viewer into the shoes of the Ghoul, allowing us to see that the good man from years past is still in there.
And then there’s Hank MacLean. We all know he’s a megalomaniacal bastard, but the show starts us off by showing a father who loves his daughter, protecting her from murderers and sacrificing himself to save her. A man who loved his wife to the point that his old life didn’t seem to matter.
Giving us these moments with Hank takes on an emotional rollercoaster, almost to the point where we don’t want to believe that the good man we were introduced could actually think it’s okay to drop nukes on the world and play God.
