Creation as a catalyst for AI innovation - art and culture as standard-bearers for current and future AI adoption and developments.

Discourse on the potential developments of AI stagnates in philosophical positions. On the one hand, dithyrambic promises of innovation “whatever the cost” through AI are not only dangerous, but often totally unfounded, poorly documented and woefully lacking in long-term perspective. On the other hand, whistle-blowers rightly bring us back to the real and dangerous consequences of AI applications already underway, and which influence important decisions, often taken without our knowledge.

So how can we make the right decisions? How can we involve the public in shaping a future that concerns them? Quite simply - by forging an ability to dream together today, about tomorrow's applications.

Culture and art are not just areas for AI applications. They are the real catalyst - let's give digital culture the place it deserves to think effectively about the real applications and adoptions of tomorrow's AI.

About the speaker:

Sandra Rodriguez, PhD, is a multidisciplinary digital artist specializing in emerging media (XR + AI). Best VR Leipzig, Best VR Numix, UNVR, and a prestigious Golden Nica at Ars Electronica. His works of the last decade address machine learning, generative AI and large language models, hijacking the prescribed uses of emerging artificial intelligence systems, for adaptations into augmented dance, live performance, multi-user experiences, museum installations or large-scale exhibitions. Rodriguez is a Sundance StoryLab Fellow, and recipient of the prestigious Sundance and MacActhur Foundation Grant for Non-Fiction. She has been a mentor, speaker and juror for major festivals (Tribeca, Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, MIT Reality Hack, etc.) and acts as a consultant for government bodies, creative studios and video game companies. From 2017 to 2022, Sandra Rodriguez is a visiting scholar and artist at MIT - where she inaugurates “HackingXR”, the first-ever official Massachusetts Institute of Technology course on creating in emerging media (VR, XR and AI).
