In this video we go on a discovery of "wayang wong", is a form of traditional Javanese and Balinese dance drama that draws its themes from episodes of the Ramayana or Mahabharata. The performances are highly stylized, embodying the refined culture of the Javanese royal courts.

In the central Javanese Kraton (royal court) of Yogyakarta, Wayang wong dance drama exemplifies the pinnacle of Javanese aesthetic harmony. It is a comprehensive theatrical art that integrates dance, drama, music, visual arts, language, and literature, all presented with a deep sense of formality and cultural sophistication.

Admittedly, while we enjoyed this theatrical performance, we found some of the masks a little frightening, and might have had a nightmare or two depicting some of these characters!
