Exhaustion is setting in. I know it. I feel it. I know you feel it, too. We’re all just crawling toward the 4th of July like it’s an oasis in the Desert of Terrible News. We could all use an outdoor frolick, a BBQ with the people we love and trust and who care about us.

But big things are happening this week before the break, and we’d better pay attention. Kilmer Abrego-Garcia is facing potentially trumped-up charges so that Trump and Steven Miller don’t have to face the fact that they got this one (and potentially millions more like him) wrong. This is the autocrat’s playbook — never admit to being wrong. If that means railroading an otherwise innocent man, so be it. What’s worse, though, is how they’re going about it. They are releasing a jailhouse snitch who has agreed to testify against Abrego-Garcia in exchange for freedom. Lisa Senecal brings the receipts.

We also talked about the looming budget reconciliation bill that they want to pass by the holiday. We’ve talked at length about how and why this thing is a catastrophe for working folks. This week it’s all about process. Who pulls the levers of power, and how can we (and the Democrats) make this as painful as possible for the Republicans who want to cut services to poor people.

And then there’s Thom Tillis. This is a story that will have legs as we move into the ‘26 election cycle. It’s a tiny, shimmering ray of hope — and it’s also one of those things we can work toward. Mostly, the comment we get (and everyone gets, and everyone makes, including us) is: What can we do to stop this?

Well … this is one of those things. Find your candidate. Find your race. Blast the zone. Work like hell to flip a seat, save a seat, and support the candidates who support Democracy.

Side note: A few of you in the chat posted some links that I wanted to read. Will you post them in the comments of this post? I love the conversation you have in these chats and always wish they could just go on and on forever. Thank you for being so active and bringing your ideas to the Square. Believe it or not, your comments and input have an impact on everyone — not just us, but everyone — in the media.
