The Irish American sculptor James Edward Kelly was born on July 30th, 1855 and was just 10 years old when the Civil War started. He grew up idolizing Union war heroes. Kelly had three lifelong passions: Art, American history, and New York City.

In 1879, Kelly met and sketched over forty commanding generals of the Civil War, including his boyhood heroes – Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Philip Sheridan. Kelly did statues for such battlefields as Gettysburg, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Brooklyn Heights--some 80 public and private bronze statues around the USA. Even with his immense success, he died penniless and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Bronx. It’s your history, learn it, know it, love it.
