On a damp morning of Oct. 10, the melancholic sound of Andrea González’s cello rang out directly next to Portland’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

The musician, activist and co-executive director of Sana Sana Centro de Salud y Expresión, played Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “O Canto do Cisne Negro” (The Song of the Black Swan).

“I am here performing…as an act of witnessing, as an act of defiance and of mourning, too. And I am doing it in front of the ICE building to send a really clear message. And that message is no one is illegal and no one is invisible,” said González, a cellist for 23 years whose focus shifted to immigrant rights when President Donald Trump’s first term began.

González hoped that her performance reassured those going into the building for appointments and helped them to feel less alone.

She called for other artists to join her outside of the ICE building, where she'll be performing again from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on both Oct. 11 and 12.
