In his final years, British artist Bryan Charnley turned his struggle with schizophrenia into a raw visual diary. He began painting intense self-portraits, each revealing the chaos inside his mind as he gradually reduced — and eventually stopped — his medication. The results were haunting, each canvas more fragmented and surreal than the last. In 1991, after completing his final self-portrait, Charnley ended his life at just 42. His work remains a chilling, honest window into the torment and beauty of a mind unraveling.
