Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle is part of the chain of Grands Boulevards, which, from west to east, consists of Boulevards de la Madeleine, des Capucines, des Italiens, Montmartre, Poissonnière, Bonne-Nouvelle, Saint-Denis, Saint-Martin, du Temple, des Filles-du-Calvaire, and Beaumarchais.
The Grands Boulevards are the quintessential Parisian boulevards. They are located on the Right Bank, on the site of the former fortifications of Charles V and Louis XIII.

The boulevard was built on the edge of the old bastion of the Bonne-Nouvelle hill on the side of the rubble hill, an eminence formed by an accumulation of refuse over several centuries, where the Bonne-Nouvelle district is located and overlooked by five or six meters on the opposite side the marsh of the Filles-Dieu sewing, market gardens until the urbanization in the 18th century of the current Faubourg-Poissonnière district.
