Coming up next the two key members of the rock and roll chapter of one the world’s greatest classic bands: the Doobie Brothers tell us a truly funny story. Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons were the principals of the Doobies' phenomenal 70s radio hits… Tom Johnston believed that if they could get all the politicians together, all the world’s leaders together on a grassy hill with the sun shining and let the music play, they would figure out they all had a lot more in common than they thought... And we could work toward a utopian world. Well as Tom will admit, it was foolish thinking and would never happen but it made for a great song. It became the fruit of “Listen to the Music” the Doobies' first massive hit. He wrote it as an afterthought and in his own words it wrote itself… All of a sudden he had this great song… coming up a masterclass in classic riffs.

Much was changing in music as the 60s switched over to the 70s. Vietnam was raging, young men were being drafted and were being shipped off, unsure of what the future would hold. It was a time of great trial. It really came to a boil when the tragedy transpired at Kent State in early May of 1970. It was in this exasperating time that a band named the Doobie Brothers formed in San Jose California.

The band would have a massive run through the rock era to now. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 though they should have been a first ballot. The band's two iterations, the Rock and the soul… From 1970 to 1975 it featured lead vocalist Tom Johnston along with the great Pat Simmons leading their classic straight-ahead rock sound that included a mix of Folk, R&B, and Country with hits galore that would dominate radio from their release to now. Songs like today’s focus: Listen to the Music, as well China Grove, Long Train Running and so many more.

Then Micheal McDonald joined the band in 1975 as a keyboard player and second lead vocalist, to give some relief to Johnston, who had some serious health challenges at the time. This brought a pop-soul element to the band including Taking it to the Streets and the #1 smash What A Fool Believes. They broke up for a time to the chagrin of Michael Douglas… then came back together with Johnston and Simmons hitting the charts at the end of the 80s with The Doctor.

The Doobies' first album came out in the spring of 1971 through Warner Bros. Produced by Lenny Wanoker and Ted Templemen who would become a mainstay with the band. The first single called Nobody failed to chart as did the album… The single was rereleased and did a little better charting at #58 on the Hot 100 but it was the second album.
