Europe’s next-generation air-defence missile has cleared its toughest hurdle. A joint French–Italian crew launched the Aster B1NT from France’s Biscarrosse range on 30 July, guiding it 150 km to a direct hit on a manoeuvring drone and qualifying the round for long-range service. Developed by Eurosam, MBDA and Thales under the OCCAR programme, B1NT adds a Ka-band seeker, new guidance algorithms and hardened electronics, giving the SAMP/T NG system the range and agility to swat cruise missiles, stealth drones and some ballistic threats. The missile will arm French and Italian land batteries and refitted Horizon frigates; the UK is evaluating naval integration. Export talks are under way with Poland, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, while first domestic deliveries start in 2026. Voice is TTS for accessibility; script fully researched & written by creator.
