A U.S. federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Vancouver-based Aritzia that accused the retailer of copying an artist's work with sculptures that appeared in window displays early last year.

The judge ruled that the artist was trying to protect the style of his art, known as Tangle sculptures, instead of the kind of single, fixed product that can be protected under copyright law. The artist can’t have a copyright on every configuration of customizable statues, the ruling said.
