Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore incorporates everyday materials into her practice as a way to reflect on the sociopolitical realities of First Nations communities. This blanket-shaped sculpture references the housing crisis in Canada, which disproportionately affects Indigenous peoples. While construction companies erect condos at record speeds, fewer and fewer people are able to access affordable housing, due to rent and real-estate inflation. A human figure seems to be underneath the tarp, embodying ideas around displacement, eviction, and housing insecurity. @artgalleryofontario #seeago #contemporaryart #torontoart #torontocanada
