This is The Unfortunate Family by Octave Tassaert. It shows a mother and daughter choosing to end their suffering together. Notice the rags stuffed in the window frame? They wanted to make sure the fumes didn't escape. A heartbreaking look at the reality of 19th-century poverty.

This is a suicide. In the 1800s, "Charcoal Death" was a common way for the extreme poor to escape their misery. Octave Tassaert painted this to show the world what was happening in the slums of Paris. Tragic, beautiful, and devastating.
