Albrecht Dürer, one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, established a new status for himself as an artist at the turn of the 16th century, gaining independence and widespread recognition. The German painter’s twelve self-portraits, which have survived to this day, represent a valuable legacy which bears witness to the social upheavals of his time.
